OBJECTIVE: Road traffic crashes cause 1.19 million deaths and millions more injuries annually. The persistently high burden has drawn attention from national and international stakeholders worldwide. Unsafe road infrastructure is one of the major risk factors for traffic safety, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: Aiming to eliminate high-risk roads in all countries, the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) developed a robust and evidence-based approach to support country transportation agencies. RESULTS: Thus far, the iRAP protocols have been used to collect 1.8 million kilometers of Crash Risk Mapping and 1.5 million kilometers of Star Rating and FSI estimations in 128 countries. Deploying an observational before-and-after (or pre-post) study design, this report estimated the fatal and series injuries (FSI) saved through use of the iRAP protocols. The study is based on 441,753 kilometers of assessed roads from 1,039 projects in 74 countries. Our results show that the implementation of iRAP's proposed countermeasures saves about 159,936 FSI annually. Throughout the lifetime of the implemented countermeasures, a total of 3.2 million FSI could be saved. CONCLUSION: While quantifying the success of the iRAP protocols, our results suggest an opportunity to save many millions more lives on the roads through expanding iRAP implementation to more regions and countries.

Unintentional injuries significantly contribute to mortality and morbidity among children under five, with higher prevalence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Deprived communities in these regions face increased injury risks, yet there is limited research on child safety tailored to their unique challenges. To address this gap, we conducted focus group discussions in rural Uganda, involving parents, village health workers, community leaders, teachers, and maids. The objective was to understand community perceptions around child safety and determine what culturally and age-appropriate solutions may work to prevent child injuries. Analysis of discussions from ten focus groups revealed five main themes: injury causes, child development and behavior, adult behavior, environmental factors, and potential safety kit components. Common injuries included falls, burns, drowning, and poisoning, often linked to environmental hazards such as unsafe bunk beds and wet floors. Financial constraints and limited space emerged as cross-cutting issues. Participants suggested educational resources, first aid knowledge, and practical devices like solar lamps as potential solutions. The study presents invaluable insights into child safety in rural Ugandan homes, emphasizing the role of community awareness and engagement in designing effective, accessible interventions. It underscores the importance of context-specific strategies to prevent childhood injuries in similar resource-constrained environments.

The long-term effects of the Vision-Zero (VZ) approach in Scandinavia are well documented. In contrast, information regarding the immediate effects of VZ at the starting phase upon gradual implementation is scarce. Taking New York City as the case study, we analyzed both the local and global effects of the Vision-Zero gradual implementation on pedestrian crashes in the early stage of implementation starting from 2014. The data analysis comprised 8,165 pedestrian injury crashes. Using location data, the crashes were matched to VZ infrastructure improvement location, start and completion dates. The experimental design included a treatment and two types of control conditions, and we controlled for well-known covariates including traffic exposure, land use, and risk-prone areas. We estimated a Geyer Saturation model and kernel density function for modeling the effect of Vision-Zero on crash intensity and dispersion two years before and after the implementation of Vision-Zero. The results reveal a significant global decrease of 6.1 % (p = 0.004) in pedestrian crash incidence in the treated sections compared with the control group two years after the treatment, and a greater dispersion of pedestrian injuries following the policy implementation.

In the U.S., the interstate highway system is categorized as a controlled-access or limited-access route, and it is unlawful for pedestrians to enter or cross this type of highway. However, pedestrian-vehicle crashes on the interstate highway system pose a distinctive safety concern. Most of these crashes involve 'unintended pedestrians', drivers who come out of their disabled vehicles, or due to the involvement in previous crashes on the interstate. Because these are not 'typical pedestrians', a separate investigation is required to better understand the pedestrian crash problem on interstate highways and identify the high-risk scenarios. This study explored 531 KABC (K = Fatal, A = Severe, B = Moderate, C = Complaint) pedestrian injury crashes on Louisiana interstate highways during the 2014-2018 period. Pedestrian injury severity was categorized into two levels: FS (fatal/severe) and IN (moderate/complaint). The random parameter binary logit with heterogeneity in means (RPBL-HM) model was utilized to address the unobserved heterogeneity (i.e., variations in the effect of crash contributing factors across the sample population) in the crash data. Some of the factors were found to increase the likelihood of pedestrian's FS injury in crashes on interstate highways, including pedestrian impairment, pedestrian action, weekend, driver aged 35-44 years, and spring season. The interaction of 'pedestrian impairment' and 'weekend' was found significant, suggesting that alcohol-involved pedestrians were more likely to be involved in FS crashes during weekends on the interstate. The obtained results can help the 'unintended pedestrians' about the crash scenarios on the interstate and reduce these unexpected incidents.

OBJECTIVE: Between 2010 and 2020, an annual average of more than 70,000 pedestrians were injured in U.S. motor vehicle crashes. Pedestrian fatalities increased steadily over that period, outpacing increases in vehicle occupant fatalities. Strategies for reducing pedestrian injuries include pedestrian crash prevention and improved vehicle design for protection of pedestrians in the crashes that cannot be prevented. This study focuses on understanding trends in injuries sustained in U.S. pedestrian crashes to inform continuing efforts to improve pedestrian crash protection in passenger vehicles. METHODS: More than 160,000 adult pedestrians injured in motor vehicle crashes who were admitted to U.S. trauma centers between 2007 and 2016 were drawn from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) Research Data Sets. The injuries in those cases were used to explore the shifting patterns of pedestrian injuries. RESULTS: The proportion of pedestrians with thorax injuries increased 3.0 percentage points to 30.7% of trauma center-admitted NTDB pedestrian cases over the 10 years studied, and the proportion with pelvis/hip injuries increased to 21.2%. The proportion of cases with head injuries fell to 48.6%, and the percentage of pedestrians with lower extremity injury (44%) did not change significantly over the 10 year period. Assessment of possible reasons for the shifts suggested that increasing numbers of sport utility vehicles, population increases among the oldest age groups, and improvements in pedestrian protection in U.S. passenger vehicles likely contributed to, but did not completely account for, the relative changes in injury frequency in each body region. CONCLUSIONS: More important than the reasons for the shifts in the relative frequency of injury to each body region are the conclusions that can be drawn regarding priorities for pedestrian protection research. Though head/face and lower extremity injuries remained the most frequently injured body regions in adult pedestrians admitted to NTDB trauma centers, the relative frequency of thorax and pelvis/hip injuries increased steadily, underlining the increasing importance of pedestrian protection research on these body regions.

Distracted driving poses a significant risk on the roadway users, with the level of distraction and crash outcomes varying depending on the type of vehicle. Drivers of passenger cars, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks, minivans experience distinct levels of distraction, leading to potential crashes. This study investigates into the severity of driver injuries resulting from distracted driving in these vehicle categories, shedding light on the variations in single-vehicle crashes. Focusing on single-vehicle crashes in Florida during 2019, involving passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans caused by distracted driving, the study examines various distractions such as, electronic communication devices (cell phones), electronic devices (navigation systems, music players), internal and external disturbances, texting, and inattentive driving. To analyze the severity of injuries resulting from distracted driving in passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans, the study employs random parameter multinomial logit models with heterogeneity in means and variances. The model estimates highlight thirty-five significant factors influencing the severity of driver injuries resulting from distracted driving. Notably, the impact of these factors varies significantly depending on the vehicle type (i.e., passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans). While many explanatory variables are specific to each vehicle type, only one factor (restraint belt usage) is common across all vehicle types, with varying magnitudes in injury outcomes. The likelihood ratio tests indicate that injury severity must be analyzed and modeled separately for passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans. Vehicle characteristics play a crucial role in driver distraction and crash outcomes. Analyzing a year of crash data, categorized by four vehicle types, has provided valuable insights into distracted driving patterns in passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans, influencing potential prevention strategies. To combat against distracted driving effectively, priority should be given to driver education and training, roadway design, vehicle technology, enforcement, and automobile insurance. The automobile industry, especially for passenger cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans, should consider implementing advanced in-vehicle technologies tailored to the specific characteristics of each vehicle type (e.g., advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)) to proactively prevent driver distraction. These proactive measures will contribute significantly to enhancing road safety and reducing the risks associated with distracted driving.

Poisonings and household injuries are frequent events among toddlers. We developed VirtualSafeHome (VSH)-a novel self-contained, Internet-based home-safety learning tool-to improve awareness of household hazards. Study aims were to investigate VSH usage characteristics. A prototype, screen-based VSH kitchen was built in Unity and delivered through the web using 3DVista and Wix. Players spot and click 21 embedded hazards. A unique feature is the ability to capture the "child's perspective" in identifying hazards. We recruited a convenience sample of adults in 2021-2022. Outcomes included number of hazards discovered, session duration, and pretest/posttest knowledge scores. Twenty-four adults identified a median 15.5 hazards; median playing time was 1022 seconds. Players reported satisfaction with ease of navigation and game features. Mean pretest/posttest knowledge scores rose from 2.0 to 2.79 (P < .035). A web-enabled video game can provide easily accessed, enjoyable training on home safety.

Bicycle-motor vehicle (BMV) accidents hold paramount importance due to their substantial impact on public safety. Specifically, road intersections, being critical conflict points, demand focused attention to reduce BMV crashes effectively and mitigate their severity. The existing research on the severity analysis of these crashes appears to have certain gaps that warrant further contribution. To address the mentioned limitations, this study first integrates multiple pre-collision features of the bicycles and vehicles to classify crash types based on the mechanism of the crashes. Then, the correlated random parameters ordered probit (CRPOP) model is employed to examine the factors influencing injury severity among bicyclists involved in intersection BMV crashes in Pennsylvania from 2013 to 2018. To gain deeper insights, this study conducts a separate analysis of crash data from 3-leg intersections, 4-leg intersections, and their combined scenarios, followed by a comparative examination of the results. The findings revealed that the presented crash typing approach yields new insights regarding injury severity outcomes. Moreover, in addition to exhibiting a comparable statistical performance contrasting to the more restricted models, the CRPOP model identified hidden correlations between three random parameters. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that analyzing combined crash data from the two intersection types obscured certain factors that were found significantly influential in the injury outcomes through analyzing sub-grouped data. Consequently, it is recommended to implement tailored countermeasures for each type of intersection.

Trauma is rising as a cause of morbidity and mortality in lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This article describes the Epidemiology, Challenges, Management strategies and prevention of pediatric trauma in lower- and middle-income countries. The top five etiologies for non-intentional injuries leading to death are falls, road traffic injuries, burns, drowning and poisoning. The mortality rate in LMICs is twice that of High-Income Countries (HICs) irrespective of injury severity adjustment. The reasons for inadequate care include lack of facilities, transportation problems, lack of prehospital care, lack of resources and trained manpower to handle pediatric trauma. To overcome these challenges, attention to protocolized care and treatment adaptation based on resource availability is critical. Training in management of trauma helps to reduce the mortality and morbidity in pediatric polytrauma cases. There is also a need for more collaborative research to develop preventative measures to childhood trauma.

The safety of vehicle occupants in oblique collision scenarios continues to pose challenges, even with the implementation of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems. While AEB reduces collision risks, studies indicate it may heighten injury risks for out-of-position (OOP) occupants. To counteract this issue, the integration of active seat belts in vehicles equipped with AEB systems is recommended. Firstly, this study established an oblique angle collision scenario post-AEB activation using data from the Chinese National Automobile Accident In-depth Investigation System (NAIS) database, analyzed through Prescan software. The dynamic response of the vehicle was examined. Following this, finite element (FE) models were validated to assess the effects of collision overlap rate, AEB braking strategy, and active seat belt pre-tensioning on occupant injuries and kinematics. Under specific collision conditions, the impact of the timing and amount of seat belt pre-tensioning, as well as airbag deployment timing on occupant injuries, was also explored. Findings revealed that a 75% collision overlap rate significantly increases driver injury risk. Active seat belts effectively mitigate injuries caused by OOP statuses during AEB interventions, with the lowest Weighted Injury Criterion (WIC) observed at a pre-tensioning time of 200 ms for active seat belts. The study further suggests that optimal results in reducing occupant injuries are achieved when active pre-tensioning seat belts are complemented by appropriately timed airbag deployment.

Introducción y objetivo: El tratamiento de heridas, y en particular el de las quemaduras es complejo, son lesiones de alto costo e implican amplios periodos de hospitalización, además de incapacidades físicas, laborales y alteraciones emocionales. Existen diferentes tratamientos para su manejo, entre ellos, recientemente, los xenoinjertos de piel de tilapia, del Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), un pez de agua dulce nativo de África que se encuentra y cultiva comúnmente en diferentes países tropicales y subtropicales. Es un tejido rico en fibras de colágeno tipo I y III, con resistencia a la humedad y estructura similar a la piel humana. Usada como xenoinjerto, posee propiedades antiinflamatorias y antibacterianas que apoyan y mejoran la cicatrización. Evaluamos la eficacia de los injertos de piel de tilapia en comparación con técnicas alternativas para el tratamiento de quemaduras. Material y método: Búsqueda bibliográfica sistemática en las bases de datos PubMed y ScienceDirect, utilizando los términos MeSH, con la ecuación de búsqueda (tilapia skin) AND (burns), incluyendo estudios de casos y controles, reportes de caso y ensayos controlados aleatorios. Resultados: Analizamos 5 trabajos para el estudio final; 4 eran de Brasil (país que actualmente tiene más experiencia en el uso de piel de tilapia en regeneración tisular) y el quinto de Indonesia. Todos en inglés. Conclusiones: De nuestra revisión podemos concluir que, en la actualidad, no existe una técnica estándar para tratar heridas, sin embargo, los injertos de piel de tilapia demostraron una mejor y más rápida cicatrización de heridas, menos cambios de apósitos, menos dolor y costos más bajos, en comparación con las técnicas convencionales.Nivel de evidencia científica 5c Terapéutico.(AU)


Background and objective: Treatment of wounds, and burns in particular, is complex, they are high-cost injuries, imply long periods of hospitalization, additionally physical and work disabilities and emotional disturbances. There are different treatments available for its management, recently including tilapia skin xenografts. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a fresh water fish, native to Africa and commonly found and farmed in different tropical and subtropical countries. The skin It is a tissue rich in type I and III collagen fibers and has resistance to moisture and skin alterations similar to human skin. Used as a xenograft, it possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that support and enhance healing. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of tilapia skin grafts in comparison with alternative techniques for the treatment of burns. Methods: A systematic bibliographic search was carried out using the PubMed and ScienceDirect data bases, MeSH terms were used with the search equation (tilapia skin) AND (burns), including case-control studies, case reports, and randomized controlled trials. Results: Five papers were included for the final study; 4 were from Brazil (the country that currently has the most experience in the use of tilapia skin in tissue regeneration) and 1 from Indonesia, all of them were written in English. Conclusions: There is currently no standard technique for treating wounds, however, fish skin grafts demonstrated faster and improved wound healing, fewer dressing changes, less pain, and lower costs, compared with conventional techniques. Las lesiones musculoesqueléticas están relacionadas en gran medida con la práctica de actividad físico-deportiva. En el caso de los niños y adolescentes se vinculan al ejercicio que realizan en el transcurso de las clases de Educación Física o las actividades deportivas extraescolares. En esta revisión sistemática, el objetivo de investigación es conocer la tipología lesional existente en el contexto escolar educativo y los programas de prevención vinculados a la descripción de las lesiones que se producen en él y conocer los programas de prevención que se implementan por docentes de Educación Física en el transcurso de sus clases. Se realizó una búsqueda de literatura científica durante los meses de enero y febrero del año 2023 en las bases de datos Web of Science, SCOPUS y PubMed. Como motores de búsqueda se utilizaron las siguientes palabras clave: "injur*", "prevent*”, “program*" y "physical education"; empleándose el operador boleano “and”. Como conclusión destaca la necesidad de continuar investigando y desarrollando programas efectivos de prevención de lesiones en el ámbito escolar y deportivo con el fin de proteger la salud y seguridad de los estudiantes. Musculoskeletal injuries are largely related to the practice of physical-sporting activity. In the case of children and adolescents, they are linked to the exercise they carry out during Physical Education classes or extracurricular sports activities. In this systematic review, the aim of the research is to find out about the types of injuries that exist in the educational school context and the prevention programmes linked to the description of the injuries that occur in it and to find out about the prevention programmes that are implemented by Physical Education teachers in the course of their classes. A search of scientific literature was carried out during the months of January and February 2023 in the Web of Science, SCOPUS and PubMed databases. The following keywords were used as search engines: "injur*", "prevent*", "program*" and "physical education", using the Boolean operator "and". In conclusion, it highlights the need to continue researching and developing effective injury prevention programmes in schools and sports in order to protect the health and safety of students. (AU)

Introduction: road traffic injuries are the eighth cause of mortality globally, killing about 1.35 million people and leaving more than 50 million others with permanent injuries and disabilities yearly. In Tanzania, the impact of road traffic crashes is still high despite a noticeable reduction in the number of associated injuries. This paper seeks to lay the foundation for promoting multisectoral actions and collaborations in dealing with public health concerns due to increased consequences caused by road traffic deaths and injuries. Methods: in 2015, a multisectoral approach was adopted to implement a 5-year (2015-2020) road safety program that aimed to advocate for amendment of the Road Traffic Act of 1973, Chapter 168 Revised Edition 2002. A series of consultative sessions were held between government and non-state actors, including different committees formed to feed each other on the agenda. The program was implemented through the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with World Health Organisation and civil society organisations. Results: it has been noted that there is a direct relation with a set of combined policy-level interactions seeking to improve the legal environment for road safety. The program committee, civil society organisations, and parliamentarians' forum were solicited as essential stakeholders in advancing policy reform. Together they conducted a series of consultative meetings, resulting in having a Bill tabled in the Parliament as a first draft. This informed policymakers and raised their attention to the magnitude of road traffic crashes and the country's social and economic burden. Conclusion: efforts still need to be expanded to analyse the existing data to understand the extent to which risk factors contribute to road crashes, injuries, and deaths. There is a need to have a strong Government involvement in strengthening ownership and sustainability of any public health intervention, such as road safety.

INTRODUCTION: Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity among children. Travelling to and from school is a major risk exposure for children around the globe. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess road traffic injury hazards for school children during dropp-off or picked-up times. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study included 94 public and private schools in Karachi, Pakistan. A structured observational tool was used to collect data on school demographics, the road traffic environment, infrastructure, injury hazards in vehicles used by school children, and child pedestrian injury risk and road use behaviors. RESULTS: A total of 860 observations of school children, drivers of vehicles transporting children, schools, and vehicles were recorded. Most schools (n = 83, 88%) did not have designated parking spaces around the school; only one public school had a parking area. Only one private school had a zebra crossing around the school premises. Very few schools (n = 13, 14%), mostly private (n = 12) had pedestrian sidewalks. Only 35 (18%) adult motorcyclists, out of 199, were wearing a helmet, and eight (6%), out of 145, car passengers were wearing seatbelts. Compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders were installed in 83 (35%), out of 235, observed vehicles. The remaining 152 (65%) did not have CNG cylinders or they were not visible to our data collectors. In 55 (23%) observations, bus passengers stepped off the bus in the middle of the road. Most pedestrians (n = 266, 99.5%) did not use a Zebra crossing. More than a quarter (n = 74, 28%) of pedestrians looked left and right before crossing the road. CONCLUSION: While traveling to school, either by walking or taking vehicular trips, children face many road traffic injury hazards in Karachi. Pedestrians and passengers exhibited risky behaviors while using roads. Further initiatives are advised from a public health viewpoint aiming at minimizing transport-related hazards.

Pedestrians are considered as one of the vulnerable road user groups. Among pedestrians of all ages, children are the most at risk. Previous studies have shown that children have inadequate knowledge of road safety and are unable to identify risks on road. Despite these limitations associated with children, society places the burden on them to protect themselves. However, to be able to adequately address child pedestrian safety issues there is the need to understand the factors that influence their crash involvement and severity of injury they sustain. To address this gap, this study performed a comprehensive analysis of historical crash data in Ghana to find holistic countermeasures for these crashes. The study used five years of child pedestrian (below 10 years) crash records obtained from the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI) in Ghana. A temporal analysis of the data revealed that the highest number of the crashes coincide with when school-going children go to and close from school. A random parameter multinomial logit model was developed to identify crash variables that are significantly associated with child pedestrian crash outcomes. The estimation results revealed that children are likely to be killed in crashes when the driver is speeding and inattentive. Also, it was found that children walking along the road, crossing the road, and those in urban areas are more susceptible to incapacitating injury crashes. Male drivers accounted for 95.8% of child pedestrian crashes, and crashes involving male drivers are 7.8% more likely to be fatal. The findings from this study provide a deeper, data-driven understanding of child pedestrian crashes and how temporal characteristics, vehicle type, location of pedestrian, traffic operation, and environmental and human factors affect crash outcomes. These findings will help in developing countermeasures like providing conspicuous pedestrian crossings, footbridges on multi-lane high-speed roadways, and the use of school buses to convey students to help mitigate the number and severity of child pedestrian crashes in Ghana, and by extension other countries in the sub-region.

RESUMO

This report supports policy recommendations in the accompanying policy statement "Child Pedestrian Safety" (www.pediatrics.org/cgi/doi/10.1542/peds.2023-62506). It reviews trends in public health and urban design relevant to pedestrian safety and provides information to assist practicing pediatricians discussing the benefits of active transportation and the specific risks and safety precautions to consider for child pedestrians at different ages. The report offers the evidence base for which programs and policies that, if implemented, could foster independent mobility for children while increasing pediatric pedestrian safety. Since the previous policy statement was published in 2009, the field of pedestrian safety has advanced with new evidence related to pediatric pedestrian education, the risks of distracted walking, the benefits of design and programming in safe routes to school, and the emergence of the "Vision Zero" public health and safety initiatives to prevent all serious and fatal transportation injuries.

Contemporary research has pointed out that while newer cars are contributing to the decrease of AIS2+ and AIS3+ injuries in several body regions, this effect is not shown for thoracic injuries like rib or sternal fractures. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of advanced seat belt systems incorporating pre-tensioners and load limiters in the prevention of fatal, AIS2+ and AIS3+ injuries overall and then focus only on the head-face-neck and thoracic areas. Data from the NASS CDS database between 2000 and 2015 was augmented with specific vehicle information taken from NHTSA's NCAP tests to identify the characteristics of the seat belt of each vehicle involved in a collision. Multivariate logistic regressions were developed to assess the likelihood of injuries for belted front seat occupants in frontal impacts. The presence of pre-tensioners and load limiters with a low load limiter (<4.5 kN) was significantly associated with a decreased risk of fatal and AIS3+ in the whole body (OR = 0.31 (p < 0.05) and OR = 0.70 (p < 0.1)), while high load limiters were significant in the prevention of fatal injuries (OR = 0.42). These effects should be considered always in combination with the delta-v of the collision, as the interaction term between delta-v and advanced seat belt features was significant. In the crashes considered, the model predicted a higher risk of injury for women compared to men, controlling for other occupant and crash factors. Impacts with a slightly oblique component increased the risk of injury compared to pure frontal impacts. After controlling for the presence of pre-tensioners and load limiters, the vehicle model year variable was found to be insignificant in any of the regression models. This study shows that the real-world effectiveness of advanced seat belts still requires further analysis. Other effects like age or impact direction might be more influential in the injury outcome than these seat belt features.

The objectives of this study were to 1) collect and analyze recent pedestrian crash cases for better understanding of the pedestrian injury distribution and mechanism, 2) use computational simulations to reconstruct pedestrian cases and estimate potential benefit of pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PedAEB) in reducing pedestrian injury risks, and 3) estimate how future pedestrian crash distribution might influence priorities for pedestrian protection. Analyses of national crash-injury dataset showed that the overall number of pedestrians in crashes as well as the serious and fatal pedestrian injuries in the U.S. have been increasing in recent years. Striking vehicle type has changed (i.e., decreased proportion of passenger cars and increase of SUVs and pickup trucks) from 20 years ago mirroring changes in the fleet distribution of vehicle sales. A total of 432 pedestrian injury cases were generated by linking the Michigan trauma data and police-reported crash data from 2013 to 2018. Among the linked cases, pickup trucks and SUVs were involved in crashes with more injuries across body regions. Notably, AIS 3+ chest injuries occur at almost the same rate as lower extremity injuries. A method, combining MADYMO simulations (n = 3,500), response surface model, and data mining, was developed to reconstruct 25 linked pedestrian crash cases to estimate the effectiveness of PedAEB. Based on national field data and MADYMO simulations, PedAEB was estimated to be effective in reducing the risk of head and lower extremity injuries but is relatively less effective in reducing the risk of chest injuries. The increased proportions of SUVs and pickup trucks in the vehicle fleet and the higher penetration of PedAEB may highlight the importance of future research into chest injury risk for pedestrian protection.
